Ramblings from Cairo, Egypt and my travels abroad.
FAQ:
Q: Is Cairo cool? A: Read the blog.
Q: Is it safe? Aren't you scared being in the Middle East? A: It's safer than San Francisco, so no.
Q: Kayvan, do you speak Arabic yet? A: Don't push me, I'm working on it!
Q: Are you taking classes? A: Yes, and it's pretty boring. Around 14 hours of Arabic a week and then a course on Graeco-Roman Egyptian history and finally one on the Politics of the Middle East (which so far is my only decent class).
Q: Whats the exchange rate? A: 5.7 Egyptian Pounds to the Dollar. Stuff is relatively cheap but things do add up. For example it's 5 pounds for a 15 minute taxi ride to downtown, 5 pounds for a meal of Egyptian food, 20 for a medium priced restaurant and 60 total for an expensive place.
Q: Are the Pyramids amazing? A: Yes, but Len tells me I need to describe them in a more original way. Basically, they're pretty big and magnificent and, well.... it's hard to describe actually. I'll work on it.
Q: Do you walk like an Egyptian? A: That's a stupid question.
